Fun at the Ranch Ė The 15th Annual Bordertown Challenge

Warm, (a little too warm) perfect, sunny weather greeted participants at the 15th annual Bordertown Challenge, round seven of the 2006 Boise Co-Op Wild Rockies Mountain Series. The event was also round 13 of the 2006 Intermountain Cup Series and pulled riders from as far away as Wyoming and Texas, and of course, a ton of Utah riders. The race featured the old-school, one-big-loop format and although temperatures were a bit warm (mid-80ís to low 90ís) plenty of water was out on the course and most of the riders loved the terrain that consisted of rolling hills covered with sagebrush and cedar and pine trees.Elevations varied from 5,800 to 9,000 feet and the course even included two tunnels that ran under the freeway.††

The event was round seven of the 2006 Boise Co-Op Wild Rockies Mountain Series, and was sponsored by the Boise Co-Op, Duke Speed, Larry Miller Subaru, Moto Tech, Cliff Bar, Vitamin Water, Wired Energy Drink, MBT Shoes, the Boise weekly, KIVI Television, J105 Radio, The X, Bandanna Running, Kenís Bicycle Warehouse, Trek, Power Cordz, Dirt Dart, and Cyclone Sports Wear. The weekend offered a 12.5 mile trail run, and a mountain bike cross-country race, ranging from a Trailblazer distance of 4 miles, up to 26.5 miles for pros. The overall event attendance was 135 competitors for the weekend, (more than double from the weather-fouled í05 event) and they enjoyed perfect weather throughout the weekend as they played in the hills and grass surrounding the gorgeous Pequop Ranch, graciously opened to the public by the Kough Family, Northern Nevadaís First Family of mountain biking.

The menís trail run was won by Kevin Donovan from Boise who ran an incredibly quick 1:29:44 as he flew around the 12.5 mile hilly course alone and unchallenged. The mountain bike cross-country was headed by the always-fast, nationally-ranked pro, Eric Jones who easily beat Reed Wycoff and Matt Sutton. The Womenís pro mountain bike cross-country event was dominated by Jen Wilson from El Paso, Texas who won by nearly 15 minutes. The fastest sport riders were Utah riders Paz Ortiz and Gina Rau.

The next round of the 2006 Boise Co-Op Wild Rockies Series will be the 8th annual Pomerelle Peaks event, held at the Pomerelle Ski Resort, 15 miles southeast of Burley, Idaho on August 12-13 and will feature a trail run, dual trials and mountain bike cross-country on Saturday and a downhill on Sunday. For more information go to www.wildrockies.com, or call Ron Dillon at (208) 573-4255.
